COVID-19 (Novel Coronavirus)
Despite no one being immune to COVID-19, there are certain individuals who should be particularly aware of their acute risk of infection. Those with underlying conditions and suppressed immune systems are more vulnerable to severe infection. This is especially true of individuals who deal with liver-related diseases, including obesity, fatty liver, diabetes, etc.
In addition to the prescribed regimen given to the global population, which consists of frequent hand washing, sanitization, and social distancing, those with liver-related diseases should be even more vigilant about disease management.
Of course this means keeping up with specialist appointments and treatments. However, many individuals with and without liver disease ask, “What else can I do while I self-quarantine to protect myself?”
A simple “self- care” measure that applies to everyone is being aware of your food and lifestyle choices. This is a critical time when you need your body to be fighting for you. As such, it’s your responsibility to feed it the proper nutrients so your liver stays functioning as best as it can. It’s your daily miracle worker, and you can’t afford for it to be slowing down.
It’s easy to snack while working from home, but try to stick to a schedule. 3 healthy meals a day (with limited starches), 1-2 light snacks, and plenty of fluids (without added sugars). The next time you go grocery shopping, think about each item you’re putting into your cart as fuel for your body, especially your liver. Stockpile the good stuff and stay away from temptations.
If there is any positive to COVID-19 amidst all the chaos, it’s that we are all now more acutely aware and concerned about our own health and behaviors. Let’s turn that concern into action, starting today.
