About Thelma King Thiel

Thelma King Thiel, RN (1926) an avid health advocate and educator is recognized internationally as the “Liver Lady” calling Global attention to the miracles the unrecognized non-complaining Liver provides. As the Founder of the Dean Thiel Foundation, 1971, in memory of her infant son Dean who was born with a misunderstood liver problem. Seeking answers when there were none she began creating and distributing understandable liver information worldwide. Invited to serve on the National Commission on Digestive Diseases she called national attention to the liver in children. Subsequently, she organized and ran the American Liver Foundation 1979 -1994 informing multi millions worldwide about their liver, their bodies Health Command Center. Collaborating with the Center for Substance Abuse Prevention at SAMHSA she informed 3,000 Grantees about the importance of protecting their liver promoting prevention of drug abuse. Impressed with her “Alcohol Prevention Message” the Coach of the Denver Broncos arranged for her to share her Liver Messages with a dozen NFL Football teams impressing thousands of football players to protect their liver’s ability to create energy they depend on.

Collaborating with Elementary Schools in Atlanta and Falcons Football Coach Dan Reeves, she educated thousands of students at the Georgia Dome about their Liver. She also conducted Meet the Researchers Programs collaborating with Health Departments in 15 states.
 
Impressed with her understandable liver messages, CDC introduced her to the World Health Organization to share her effective liver education approach. with dozens of European Health Agencies. A documentary called The Visionaries featuring The Liver Lady’s daily activities aired on 140 PBS stations promoting liver information. Concerned about the lack of effective liver information she organized the Liver Health Initiative in 2016 At 100 years of age she continues her daily promotion of liver information worldwide.

The Problem

Approximately half a billion individuals around the world are living with a liver disease. ​Viral hepatitis, a silent epidemic, claims 1.4 million lives annually - making it comparable to HIV, tuberculosis, and malaria. Many chronic liver-related diseases, including hepatitis, obesity, fatty liver,diabetes, high cholesterol, and drug & alcohol abuse, are preventable. ​​

Avoid Risky Behaviors

​Preventing disease, promoting screenings, and improving patient adherence to treatment regimens depends on an understanding of the importance of the liver. Liver health education isthe critical rationale for motivating individuals to adopt healthy lifestyles and avoid risk behaviors.​ LHI works to promote liver health education bycreating educational materials, collaborating with organizations, and influencing health policy.
